The Carbo-loader
(A Case history by Nicole Baird)

A 50 year-old-male patient came to our Nutrition Center for advice on increasing energy. He was an avid cyclist and swimmer. As much as he loved exercising, he would frequently have to stop for a candy bar, or at the juice bar. It seemed to give him energy for a short while, but by the time he was done working out, he felt lightheaded and totally exhausted. Even on his days off from biking and swimming, he would get lightheaded shortly after lunch and never make it until dinner without some fruit.

The patient’s normal diet was very close to vegetarian, approximately 35% protein and fat with 65% carbohydrates. He, like many athletes, thought the magic athlete food was PASTA. During metabolic typing, we discovered that he was a fast oxidizer who was prone to these hypoglycemic spells making him feel lightheaded and hungry for a quick fix.

After Metabolic typing the best diet for the patient was Hauser Diet #2, or 75% protein and fat with 25% carbohydrates.

“No way!” he said. He was so used to eating a very low fat and high carbohydrate diet he didn’t see how he was going to adjust. “I really just thought the doctor was just going to ‘prescribe’ something that would make me have more energy.” I explained that the diet WAS the prescription. After discussing higher protein food choices to avoid hypoglycemia the patient said he would try it, although still in disbelief. It is difficult for someone who is used to carbo-loading for races and frequenting the juice bar at the gym to learn that he or she really is not doing anything to help with endurance or strength. This patient was a tough one to convince at first.

When he returned for a follow up nutrition consult he had a completely different attitude. “I feel better than I have felt since high school!” he said. He was not getting lightheaded or shaky while working out. He was also able to work out for longer. As excited as he was about his workouts, he was happiest when his wife commented to him that his clothes have been fitting much better. Even though he was not technically overweight, eating right for his metabolic type still made an improvement in his appearance.
