Living with digestive problems your whole life?
Nicole Baird, Patient Educator

Can you imagine? Or maybe you are doing just that. If you are someone who is still searching for the magic little pill to get to the root cause of your digestive disorder, think again. Your problem is not a lack of a pharmaceutical drug. It is likely the end result of your eating habits. If you are sick to your stomach of being sick to your stomach then think about what it would be like to NOT feel that way. If you are having a hard time remembering what that feels like, you are not alone. This is one of the chronic conditions we see all the time. Digestive problems are something people will put up with for years. A recent patient update illustrates this point.

A 60 year old woman came in complaining of digestive problems and weight loss. She had digestive problems for years which were aggravated by her high processed food intake. After testing it was discovered that the patient had some food allergies, mostly to dairy, garlic, and eggs. She also had high candida levels and hormone imbalance. Dr. Filice had outlined the treatment regimen for the patient, and a very large part of it concerned her diet. After discussing the principles of the candida diet, allergies, portion sizes, and specific food tastes, the patient was on her way to getting well.

During a recent update from the patient, she was excited to share an experience with me that proved to her that she has been making some strides with her new diet. First she expressed the frustration that she has trying to find foods that she can eat outside of her building during lunch. Most often she would bring her lunch or know what items in the cafeteria suited her diet. One day she spent her entire lunch break just going into restaurants, reading the menus, and walking back out because there was nothing she could have. Eventually she just decided on a salad with “roasted” chicken from a local restaurant. The salad arrived soaked in a sugar-laden dressing with “breaded and fried” chicken. In her frustration, she decided to eat it and get back to work. Immediately upon eating just a portion of the salad she complained of wheezing, terrible cramps, gas, and the “whole disruptive digestive scene.” This lasted for about 24 hours. Oddly enough, the patient said she was “glad” she made the bad choice to eat the food because it confirmed for her how good she was feeling before, and now, once again. Suddenly, the patient developed a fondness for her diet restrictions!

If you are struggling with chronic digestive problems that are only covered up by pills and anti-diarrhea liquids think about living with that until you are over 60, like this patient. It is not a pleasant thought. Do something about it now. Think about it…We eat everyday. Don’t you want to make it as enjoyable as possible?
