WHAT IS CHELATION?
The term chelate means to bind and remove. Chelation Therapy is an in-office treatment where EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid), a synthetic amino acid, is administered to a patient intravenously under the prescription of a fully-licensed physician (an M.D. or a D.O.), in an effort to bind with those harmful substances in the blood (metals such as aluminum, lead, mercury, and others) which may cause chronic health disorders and remove them. The infusion typically lasts 3-4 hours and is done weekly for a period of weeks or months. Monthly or Bi-monthly treatments are often done for maintenance therapy.

HOW DOES CHELATION WORK FOR HEART DISEASE?
Chelation Therapy, along with nutrition, promotes health by correcting the major underlying cause of arterial blockage and heart disease. Damaging oxygen free radicals are increased in the presence of such metals as iron, lead, and aluminum, and are believed to act as a chronic irritant to blood vessel walls and cell membranes. (EDTA) Chelation Therapy and other agents remove the heavy metals, thus decreasing the oxidant burden on the body and increasing its antioxidant reserves. Other risk factors for heart disease including high homocysteine and insulin levels are also addressed. This combined approach utilizing nutrition and Chelation Therapy has helped many people rid themselves of angina pains and prevent further arterial blockages.

IS CHELATION SAFE?
Chelation therapy is among one of the safest medical procedures. More than 400,000 patients have received over four million treatments during the past 30 years. Because physicians have had such vast experiences with EDTA, the dosage of EDTA and the speed of infusions are now standardized and taught by the American College for the Advancement in Medicine (ACAM).

EDTA is metabolized in the kidneys. For this reason, kidney function must be monitored before and during Chelation Therapy with a periodic blood test. Stress to the kidneys has been reported in some cases. Possible side effects from Chelation Therapy include allergy, fatigue, headache, and flu-like symptoms after receiving the infusion.

CAN CHELATION BE USED WITH OTHER DRUG TREATMENTS FOR ARTERY DISEASE?
Chelation Therapy, as well as nutrition, can be utilized with most other therapies for  cardiovascular disease. Medications for blood thinning, high blood pressure, or those for the heart should be continued while undergoing Chelation and Nutritional Therapies. The continued need for these medications while undergoing the therapies will be assessed by the physicians involved in your care.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF CHELATION THERAPY IS WORKING FOR ME?
The most important measure of health is how you are feeling. About every six Chelations you will fill out a questionnaire to help document progress. At this time a blood test will be done to monitor kidney and liver function as well as cholesterol. A meeting with the physician will then be done to assess whether further testing is needed or a change in the chelation therapy program is needed. 

You will also be monitored utilizing standard blood tests that show risk factors for heart disease. These could include cholesterol/HDL ratio, triglyceride/HDL ratio, homocysteine level, and platelet aggregation study (blood thickness level).

 CASE HISTORIES FOR HEART DISEASE 

53 Year-Old-Man
The patient is a 53 year-old retired male with a long history of Coronary Artery Disease. He had significant anterior Myocardial Infarction (MI). He never experienced chest pain. He only has chest pressure with exertion. In 1996, he underwent a Thallium Stress test which shows reversible ischemia. The Thallium Stress test was terminated because of fatigue and shortness of breath, no chest pain was reported. The cardiologist recommended cardiac catheterization and finally bypass. After bypass the patient followed up his cardiologist regularly, being prescribed Cardizem, Ecotrin and Lanoxin. In February 2001, he had another Thallium Stress Test, which was abnormal. Thallium test was terminated due to fatigue and shortness of breath. They did another Cardiac Catheterization with a recommendation for another bypass. After researching different options, the patient pursued Alternative Medicine.

CMRS Visit: The patient researched about Chelation on his own and educated himself about this alternative for surgery. After researching the benefits of chelation for Coronary Artery Disease, he decided to pursue this avenue. The patient came for consultation in March 2001. As stated above he has long history of Coronary Artery Disease. He states that he never had chest pain but he had chest pressure and shortness of breath with exertion. He is taking Zocor, multi-vitamin for men, Tomato Lycopene, Folic Acid, B complex, Vitamin E and Vitamin C.

Chelation Begins: March 2001 the patient started chelation once a week. Along with the Chelation some supplements were recommended for him, like Cardimax, Lipitrol, Cod Liver oil, Vascuzyme, Small Bowel Powder, Vitamin E, Carnitine and Co-enzyme Q10. Few hormones were added like Testosterone and DHEA. He had 30 chelations. In July of 2001, the patient had another Thallium test. Their findings are as follows. "Stress images suggest minimal diminish activity in the apex. The remainder of the stress in unremarkable. Rest images demonstrate reperfusion of the apex. A gated ejection fraction of 53% was obtained. Impression: Small area of reversible Ischemic changes in the apex as described."

Conclusion: Comparing test result few years after CABG to 30-chelation treatment is remarkable.

66 YEAR-OLD-MAN
Patient suffered from: Irregular Heartbeat, Artery Blockage, High Blood Pressure, Acid Reflux, Gall Bladder Mass.

Medical History: The patient is a 66-year-old retired man. He has history of irregular heartbeat and blockage of arteries. His thallium stress test suggests artery blockage. He also has some kind of mass in gall bladder. He has borderline high blood pressure and acid reflux.

Caring Medical Visit: The patient came to Caring Medical in October of 1997 after reading a book about chelation. He presented symptoms of irregular heartbeat and told us that he has possible artery blockage. He has acid reflux and discomfort from the mass in the gall bladder. On his first visit, he was checked for heavy metal toxicity, checked for the basic blood chemistry and kidney function and mineral status. The heavy metal test result came out that the patient has some heavy metal toxicity. His lead, mercury and cadmium were high. He also has some mineral deficiencies. His triglyceride came out high. He started chelation once a week. Supplements were recommended for him to take with the chelation therapy.

Supplements: Vitamin E, Cardiotone, Magnesium, Potassium Citrate, Co Enzyme Q 10, Hawthorne Berry, L-Carnitine, Gensing and GABA.

How’s he doing now?: The patient had 22 chelations in the span of a year. He still continues to take his supplements. This what he said since taking chelation "I cannot find my irregular heart beat and my blood pressure has been normal range. My discomfort from the gall bladder appears better and I have much less acid reflux where I do not need to take medication for it. I am very pleased and convinced."

 CASE HISTORIES FOR OTHER DISORDERS 

73 YEAR-OLD-WOMAN POOR LEG CIRCULATION, PARKINSON'S DISEASE
The patient is a 73 year-old-woman with a history of stroke and Parkinson’s since 1996, depression, hypertension, high cholesterol, and blocked arteries in both legs.

Caring Medical Visit: The patient came to Caring Medical with complaints of bilateral leg pain and legs are cold to touch. She was on several medications for hypertension, depression, hypothyroidism, and stroke prevention. She was interested in natural medicine and chelation therapy. A thyroid profile, blood pH, metabolic typing, REAMS, hair analysis, and platelet aggregation studies were ordered. Chelation therapy once a week was ordered, and the patient could begin chelation as soon as her lab results were in. When th elab results were reviewed in the office, they revealed that her blood was too thick and she was eating too many carbohydrates. Cod liver oil, vitamin E, a multi vitamin powder and ginkgo biloba were added. She was instructed on how to decrease the carbohydrates in her diet and add more vegetables and protein.

How is the patient now?: She states she has had 24 chelation treatments and has had no more tremors since beginning the IV’s. Her energy is also greatly improved. Chelation decreased to every two weeks.

Post-script: She has continued to do chelation every 2 weeks (has had 47 treatments to date), and has continued to show improvement in leg pain and daily activities. She states she has no limitations.

 HEAVY METAL TOXICITY AND CHELATION 

THE DANGERS OF HEAVY METALS
Heavy metal poisoning has become a major health problem, especially since the industrial revolution. Heavy metals are in the water we drink, the foods we eat, the air we breathe, our daily household cleaners, our cookware and our other daily tools. A heavy metal has a density at least 5 times that of water and cannot be metabolized by the body, therefore accumulating in the body. Heavy metal toxicity can cause our mental functions, energy, nervous system, kidneys, lungs and other organ functions to decline. Learning where these metals can be found and decreasing one’s exposure is vital to staying healthy. For the person who wonders if they have heavy metal poisoning, testing is essential.

Treatment for Heavy Metal Poisoning
The best treatment for heavy metal poisoning is chelation. Chelation is a treatment where a synthetic amino acid called EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) is administered intravenously. It was originally used in the 1940’s to treat solders with lead poisoning. When chelation proved to have good results the FDA approved it. When EDTA enters the bloodstream it binds to the metal atoms and flushes them out with the urine. This is usually within the first 24 hours of the chelation treatment.

EDTA chelation is used to treat such heavy metal poisonings as lead and cadmium. Lead poisoning can also be treated orally using the chelating agent DMSA (dimercaptosuccinic acid). Mercury poisoning is treated with DMPS (dimercaptopropane sodium sulfonate) which is administered intravenously. DMSA (chemet) can also be used for mercury poisoning.

The EDTA chelation IV lasts for approximately 3 hours. It is generally given weekly for a period of time based on the individual case. Kidney and liver functions are monitored every few treatments. This is because the chelation must pass out the urine with all the metals that it has collected throughout the blood stream. DMPS IV chelation therapy takes about 20 minutes.

In general after six to ten chelations the urine is again collected to see if the chelation is still removing heavy metals. If not, the chelation is stopped. If heavy metals such as lead or mercury are still present then the chelation is given another six to ten treatments and the urine test repeated at that time.

Testing for Heavy Metals - HAIR ANALYSIS
When heavy metal toxicity is suspected, a good screening test is a hair analysis. Scientists have been evaluating hair specimens for types of metals and concentration as early as 1931. A hair analysis acts as a timeline for exposure to various elements. It is a safe and non-invasive way to collect tissue and will help a doctor treat the underlying problem more efficiently.

At Caring Medical the hair analysis measures for 12 toxic elements including mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminum, and cadmium. It measures for 33 nutrient elements including calcium, zinc, manganese, and cobalt. Additional elements measured in the hair analysis are iron, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, and titanium.

The hair is generally taken from the nape of the neck. That is, if the hair is long enough. About an inch, in length, closest to the skin is needed. For bald men or women with short hair, this isn’t always the route taken. Hair samples can also be taken from the under arm or the pubic area. Besides length, the problem of hair treatments can arise. Hair chemicals, including dyes, can contain lead that will attach to the hair and may contaminate the sample. For the most accurate results it is best to refrain from chemically treating hair for at least 2 months.

Testing for Heavy Metals - BLOOD TESTS
Hair analysis is a very useful tool in detecting what causes chronic symptoms but is unable to detect very recent heavy metal exposures. For recent, acute exposures to metals such as mercury or lead a blood test is suggested. A 7ml tube of blood is needed for the test. In the blood various heavy metals can be tested including mercury and lead.

Testing for Heavy Metals - URINE TESTS
The most sensitive test though for heavy metal load according to various natural medicine specialists is the provocative urine test. At Caring Medical a person is infused with a chelating agent such as EDTA or DMPS and then the urine is collected for 24 hours. The chelating agent, after being infused intravenously, will go into the tissues of the body and bind the various heavy metals including cadmium, lead, and mercury. It is then excreted out of the urine where the heavy metal levels are measured. This is often the only way a person can tell what types of heavy metal exposure they have had. For children, such as those with autism, chemet (DMSA), an oral chelating agent, is given for three days. The child’s urine is then collected for 6 hours to look for heavy metal poisoning. As a side note, oral chelation therapy has been a very effective treatment for autism at Caring Medical.

Hemochromatosis (iron overload)-
A disease with the ability to be passed on hereditarily or acquired. It can cause hair loss and skin discoloration. It can increase the possibility for stroke and memory loss. Serious heart problems can erupt from hemochromatosis by clinging on to the arteries and in time causing them to become blocked, and also damaging the electrical nerves causing an irregular heart beat. The liver may also become enlarged and lead to cirrhosis. Hemochromatosis also messes with the digestive system, in that bleeding ulcers may develop. Severe arthritis can also develop because an iron overload causes a precipitation of calcium pyrophosphates in the joint spaces, the cartilage of the joint and the surrounding tissues of the joint. As if that weren’t enough, the susceptibility to infections is significantly increased.
