Keep Your Feet Flat On The Ground
When You Have Your Blood Pressure Taken!
Robert Filice, M.D.

BLOOD PRESSURE - Crossed Leg - In a study of 238 subjects (mean age 56.1 years, age range 25-83 years, 138 males) with unmedicated high-normal blood pressure (130-139/85-89 mmHg), stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension (i.e. mean systolic blood pressure 130-179 mmHg and/or mean diastolic blood pressure 85-109 mmHg), subjects had their blood pressures taken with their feet flat on the floor and then after 3 minutes. The blood pressure was again taken with the subject’s legs crossed at the knee. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures increased significantly with the crossed-leg position. Crossing the leg at the knee results in a significant increase in blood pressure, and patients should be advised to have their feet flat on the floor when their blood pressure is taken. “Effects of Crossed Leg on Blood Pressure,” Pinar R, Sabuncu N, et al, Blood Pressure, 2004;13:252-254.

Dr Bob comment: This study speaks for itself as far as NOT crossing your legs during blood pressure readings, but the results should also speak to us about this additional negative arterial vascular effect of leg crossing. We already know that this maneuver is bad for the venous part of the circulation and can aggravate or trigger varicose and spider veins in the legs. Keep your legs uncrossed! Ladies may safely cross their ankles instead.
